Girls Scouts of Eastern Washington & Northern Idaho is looking for Unit Camp Counselors for their 2019 Summer Day Camp Program.
$5,000 for the Camp Season.
The 2019 Day Camp is from June 10 -August 23, and the day camp shift is 8:00am - 5:00pm, Monday-Friday.

Girl Scouts of Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho has been serving girls since 1937. Our Summer Day Camp operates out of our Program Center in Spokane, which houses a full size gymnasium, teaching kitchen, computer lab, art studio, rock climbing wall, and an overnight hostel with its own kitchen. Over 300 girls each summer ages 5-17 enjoy a weekly themed program that includes STEM, arts and crafts, cooking, drama, swimming, hiking, and other skill-building fun.


Under the direction of the Unit Director, the Unit Counselor is responsible for planning, leading, and implementing programs, trips, activities, and experiences for girls ages 5-17 This position will also be accountable for the general safety and empowering the personal growth and skill development of the participants in their group. The Unit Counselor exhibits enthusiasm and patience while exemplifying the Girl Scout core values of honesty, caring, courage, and character.

$5,000 for the Camp Season.


  • Attends to safety of campers at all times; follows and instructs campers on procedures for incidents and emergencies

  • Independently leads and supervises up to 8 campers as a group during main camp hours, coordinating the group’s daily schedule

  • Works to create a positive group culture through team-building and problem-solving activities

  • Plans, prepares, and implements age-appropriate programming and curriculum

  • Engages all campers in games, crafts, or other activities at all times (including during extended hours, lunch, and other “down-time” periods)

  • Provides opportunities for girls to lead during all activities, “planning” meetings, and closing circles

  • Ensures weekly age-appropriate programming requirements in STEM, art, cooking, hiking, etc. are met through daily activities and off site trips

  • Models and instructs on personal responsibilities such as conflict management, positive relationships, following rules, and respecting camp property.

  • Follows and implements behavior management procedures with all campers

  • Completes and submits all paperwork in a timely and efficient manner
  • Exhibits punctuality and communication in time management, including daily and weekly breaks
  • Respects and follows the “Camp is for the camper” philosophy by attending to camper and camp needs first
  • Represents camp appropriately in the community and with parents by maintaining personal hygiene, following camp dress code, and communicating respectfully with campers, parents and other adults
  • Participates in staff trainings, meetings, and daily camp cleaning including but not limited to deep cleaning, lifting or moving equipment, and taking out trash

  • Reports concerns and incidents to Unit Director. Assistant Camp Director, or Camp Director

  • Practices the Girl Scout Promise and Law with an inclusive attitude and a willingness to problem-solve
  • Follows all procedures and regulations according to the GSEWNI Council, GSUSA, and state and federal guidelines and laws and the American Camp Association

  • Performs all other duties as assigned

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Current First Aid & CPR certification
  • One (1) year experience working with girls ages 5-17 through camp, day care, or teaching preferred
  • Ability to grasp the landscape within an organization, show passion for working with Girl Scouts and the nonprofit environment and expertise in using various communication vehicles that engage girls, volunteers, parents, donors and the community
  • Willingness to subscribe to the principles of the Girl Scout movement, including acceptance of the Girl Scout philosophy and willingness to maintain membership in the Girl Scouts USA

Physical Abilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to:

Regularly lift objects up 30 pounds, repetitive movement of the wrists, hands and/or fingers. Climb, pull, stoop, kneel, crawl, twist and crouch while performing custodial duties. Must be able to stand or walk for long periods of time, up to 12 hours, and work in inclement weather. Clearly see 20+ feet, with or without corrective lenses and differentiate between colors (no color blindness)

  • Multi-Tasking Ability: ability to handle many diverse tasks/projects at one time; ability to prioritize and complete them on time.

Work Environment:

While performing the essential duties/responsibilities of this job, the employee lives for up to 12 weeks in close proximity to others, including sharing living quarters, restrooms, laundry facilities and a common staff lounge. May only use personal electronics (such as computers, phones and other devices) only during personal designated breaks and out of sight of campers. Multi-tasking in a fast paced environment is an integral part of this position, as is the ability to work with high-stress situations based on the nature of GSEWNI mission and daily work.
